The Oculus Rift is an awesome piece of technology. You can play games, watch movies, play games, watch movies, play games, watch movies, play games, watch movies, play games, watch movies…

Any user of the Oculus Rift will have experienced the problem of the HDMI port of the headset not working. You can get around this by hooking up your Oculus Rift to your PC via HDMI, but you get this annoying problem where the image on the monitor gets all messed up.

You know that newfangled gadget you just got? The Oculus Rift? Yeah, the first time you hooked it up to your computer, you got some weird issues on startup. For example, it won’t show up on the Oculus Dashboard on the desktop. It also won’t connect to SteamVR or any games that require Dual Head or 3D. Another issue is that the Rift won’t even show up on the HDMI output. This is the worst-case scenario for many, who were hoping to just watch movies on their new toy. Thankfully, there is a fix.

I just discovered that I couldn’t use my Samsung Galaxy S10+ with my Oculus Rift (powered by the Oculus Go). I’ve been using the Rift for a few years (with the DK2 version) and just discovered that I couldn’t stream material from my phone to the HDMI-connected headset. I tried a variety of cords and adapters, but to no avail. I eventually found out that it had something to do with my phone’s HDMI connection. I had to purchase a male to female converter (the one that came with the phone wouldn’t work) before I could use the Rift.

Oculus utilizes a custom HDMI cable that deviates from the HDMI standard, causing problems for certain users. There are a few options for resolving this. The simplest and most straightforward option is to replace the cable. The second option is to use an HDMI switch to circumvent the HDMI specification. The third (and most costly) step is to connect the headset to the computer via HDMI cable.

When an Xbox 360 or Xbox One sends an HDMI signal to the Oculus Rift, the issue arises. This is due to the HDMI cable’s unique connection, which differs from HDMI cables used on other devices. A HDMI 2.0b converter cable may be used to fix this problem. Additionally, to guarantee compatibility with all current devices, the cable may need to be upgraded to the most recent version. On the Rift, this is a software problem. The Oculus software will update automatically, but if the issue continues, you may do a manual upgrade by downloading the most recent Oculus software update.

Some Rift users have complained that the HDMI cable from the headset isn’t being picked up by their PC. Here’s how to fix the problem and go back inside virtual reality.

    Click Next. Click Next.

You can now see which connections are active and which are inactive. As you can see, the HDMI cable is not reading.

Keep this window open as you go through the steps below.

Examine each and every one of the connections.

The first thing you should do is double-check that your Rift’s connections are in excellent working order.

Examine whether or not you’re using an HDMI splitter.

When using an HDMI splitter on the back of your PC, we’ve discovered a problem. If your PC display doesn’t support DisplayPort or DVI, you’ll need to purchase an adapter or a new monitor cable. With both your display and the Rift on at the same time, a splitter will not work.

For connecting your monitor to your computer, check out this Cable Matters DisplayPort cable. It’s six feet long and costs about $11 with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just purchase an adapter and utilize the HDMI cable you currently have attached to your monitor? It’s not a problem. A $10 converter from Connection Matters enables you to connect your monitor’s HDMI connection to a DisplayPort on the back of your computer.

Look over your PC.

If the HDMI cable is currently attached to your computer, disconnect it, check the end for damage, and then reattach it to your GPU’s HDMI port.

Make sure it’s not linked to the HDMI port on your motherboard. Take a look inside your case if you’re not sure which HDMI port is which.

In the Oculus app, check to see whether your HDMI cable is now reading.

Take a look at your Rift.

Is the HDMI cable still hidden? It’s time to double-check your Rift’s conclusion.

  1. Carefully separate the foam-covered part of the facial interface from the remainder of the headset.

    Remove facial interface.

  2. Unplug the cable from the Rift after the facial interface has been removed.

    Unplug the cable.

  3. Examine the cable for any damage before replacing it. Check to see whether it’s securely attached.

    Check the cable's health.

  4. It’s as easy as matching the facial interface to the head-mounted display and gently putting it in place to replace it.

    Replace the facial interface.

Ensure that your USB connections are safe.

Problems with the USB cable on your Rift are often mistaken as HDMI problems.

To begin, disconnect your USB cable and plug it into a different port. Try a USB 3.0 port if you’re using a USB 2.0 port, and vice versa.

The Rift has known USB compatibility issues, which may be resolved with a new motherboard or a USB extension card. For additional information, see our guide to troubleshooting Rift USB issues.
